A collection of essays, three previously unpublished, that consider John Marshall's leadership role in the U.S. Supreme Court during the formative period of its institutional development from 1801 to 1835. The collection includes a historiographic essay, a statistical analysis of Supreme Court opinions in the Marshall era, and biographies of Associate Justices William Cushing, William Johnson, and Bushrod Washington. Johnson is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of South Carolina School of Law. A past president of the American Society for Legal History, he was co-author with the late George L. Haskins of Foundations of Power: John Marshall, 1801-15 (1981), the second volume in the Oliver Wendell Holmes Devise series on the history of the Supreme Court. Johnson is also General Editor of the University of South Carolina Press series The Chief Justiceships of the United States Supreme Court. His earlier monographs include The Chief Justiceship of John Marshall, 1801-1835 (1997) and Gibbons v. Ogden: John Marshall, Steamboats, and the Commerce Clause (2010). He also served for ten years on the Papers of John Marshall editorial project, with primary responsibility for volumes 1 and 2 (1974 and 1977). - Publisher's website.
