Composed by Mr. Cotton and the ministers of New-England, and sent to the church at Salem, as a further confirmation of the bloody doctrine of persecution for cause of conscience. Examined and answered.

The "Scriptures and reasons" is a part--the 6th-9th chapters--of a work printed in 1620, entitled "A most humble supplication of the King's Majesty's loyal subjects, ready to testify all civil obedience ..." signed by Your Majesty's loyal subjects unjustly called Anabaptists", a work attributed to John Murton. The "Model of church and civil power" "examined and answered" in the last fifty-six chapters, is probably not that ascribed to Richard Mather, but an earlier one, never printed, drawn up in accordance with the Act of the General court, March 4, 1634, "by the elders and brethren of every church within this jurisdiction". cf.
