Barwick had a distinguished law and parliamentary career, was Chief Justice of the High Court 1964-81, Attorney-General 1958-63, Minister for External Affairs 1961-64, and held various other positions, incl. Chancellor of Macquarie University 1967-78 and Leader of the Australian Delegation to the United Nations between 1960 and 1964.
