Note:
Cover title.
"Comprising nearly 10,000 volumes in the several departments of literature. In law, it is remarkably full and comprehensive, ranging from an English imprint of 1409 to the latest publications, and including various text-books and English and American reports, many being curious specimens of typography and binding. Among the miscellaneous books are many that are desirable in the departments of Americana, history, travels, biography, belle-lettres, political economy, philosophy, the classics, etc., etc. The collection of works relating to Virginia is more varied and valuable than has probably ever been offered before, and includes the serials of law reports, collected statutes, history, biography and ephemeral pamphlets. The value of the books is largely enhanced by the critical and explanatory manuscript notes of their late eminently learned possessor. Many of them are attractive also by reason of past associations, containing as they do, Memorials of distinguished ownership in England and America, autographs, book-plates, manuscript notes, &c."
"To be sold by auction, January 18th, 1881, at Richmond, Va."
"Prepared under the supervision of Mr. R.A. Brock, corresponding secretary of the Virginia Historical Society ... John E. Laughton, Jr., auctioneer of literary and personal property, etc."
