Judges -- Biography.
Summary:
Freeman's 1993 biography of Lord Denning meticulously tracks the various events in Lord Denning's life. The book deals with Lord Denning's life up to 1994 when he was appointed a High Court judge, his work as a judge prior to his appointment as Master of the Rolls; the next 20 years as Master of the Rolls and as head of the Court of Appeal; and finally his life after retirement in 1982. There is no real analysis of how Denning's many innovative ideas have affected the modern major advances in the common law. That is not to say that Freeman does not explain the critical role that Lord Denning played in the development of principles such as estoppel, fundamental breach and the constructive trust. Freeman's biography is an interesting read because it helps us understand the many forces that were brought to bear to produce one of the most innovative judges in the common law.
