His Honour Judge Shanahan is a graduate of The University of Queensland Bachelor of Commerce (1974) and Bachelor of Laws (1977).

Judge Shanahan was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1977 and as a barrister of the High Court of Australia in 1981. At the time of His Honour’s admission Judge Shanahan was a clerk and legal officer at the Public Defenders Office (1976–1980). In 1980, His Honour was appointed Assistant Public Defender at the Public Defenders Office (1980–89).

Prior to being appointed to the bench, Judge Shanahan was a member (1986–1994) and later,chair (1994–98) of the Queensland Law Society’s Criminal Law Committee,executive officer (on secondment) of the Criminal Code Review Committee (1989–1991) and Public Defender for the Criminal Law Division Legal Aid (1991–98).

His Honour is a member of the Judicial Council of Australia’s Governing Council (2008–) and has held membership with JCA since 1998. Judge Shanahan has been a member of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration since 1998 and sits on the AIJA Jury Project Committee.

His Honour has been a member a number of indigenous committees including the National Judicial College of Australia’s Indigenous Cultural Awareness Committee (Qld) (2009–) and the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration’s Indigenous Justice Committee (2001).

Additionally, His Honour is a member of the District Court Judges’ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee (2009–), the Judges’ Criminal Law Committee (1999–) and the Supreme and District Court’s Benchbook Committee (2004–). Judge Shanahan was convenor of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Committee (1999–2009) and currently convenes the Criminal Law Committee (2009–).His Honour has been involved with the District Court’s indigenous students mentoring scheme since its inception in 2011.

His Honour was appointed a judge of the District Court on 19 August 1999. Prior to this appointment, His Honour served as an acting judge of the District Court (10 August 1998–6 November 1998; 7 November 1998–18 December 1998). Judge Shanahan was appointed a judge of the Childrens Court in 1999 and appointed President of that Court in 2011.
