Justice McMurdo holds a Bachelor of Laws from The University of Queensland (1976). Her Honour has been awarded Honorary Doctorates from Griffith University (2001) and Queensland University of Technology (2009). In 2012 Justice McMurdo was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws from The University of Queensland.

After graduating, Justice McMurdo worked as associate to his Honour Judge Alan Demack, later the Honourable Justice Demack, first in the District Court of Queensland and then in the Family Court of Australia (1975–76).

In 1976 Justice McMurdo was admitted as a barrister and worked at the Public Defender’s Office where she was its first female paralegal. Her Honour was Assistant Public Defender from 1977 to 1989. Her Honour practised at the Bar from 1989 to 1991.

Justice McMurdo served as a member of the Criminal Justice Commission’s Misconduct Tribunal (1990–91) and was a founding committee member (1978–1982) and president (1980–81) of the Women Lawyers Association. Her Honour is a founding Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law and a member of the American Law Institute.

In 2001 Justice McMurdo was awarded the Centenary Medal and later appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (2007) for service to the law and judicial administration in Queensland, particularly in the areas of legal education and women's issues. In 2006 Her Honour was the recipient of the Agnes McWhinney award for outstanding professional contribution by a woman lawyer.

Justice McMurdo was appointed President of the Queensland Court of Appeal in 1998. Her Honour has previously served as Acting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Queensland (2015), judge of the Childrens Court of Queensland (1993–98) and judge of the District Court of Queensland (1991–98).

President McMurdo was featured in 'A Woman's Place: 100 years of Queensland Women Lawyers', published by the Supreme Court Library Queensland in 2005.
