His Honour Judge Robertson is a graduate of The University of Queensland—Bachelor of Arts (1968) and Bachelor of Laws (1971). Judge Robertson was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Queensland University of Technology in 2003.
Judge Robertson was clerk to His Honour Judge Alan Keith McCracken of the District Court of Queensland (1970–71) and articled clerk (1971–73) with Elliot and Co Solicitors before being admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1973. His Honour was made partner at Elliot and Co Solicitors in 1973. In 1978 Judge Robertson established JM Robertson & Co which changed its name to Robertson O’Gorman in 1981.
Judge Robertson was Deputy President of the Queensland Community Corrections Board between 1991 and 1994.
His Honour was a member of the Law Council of Australia Human Rights Committee (1994–97), the Queensland Solicitors' Board (1993–94) and the Supreme Court Library Committee (1992–94).
Judge Robertson has served on a number of District Court committees. His Honour was the first District Court judge appointed to Ipswich in 1994. Judge Robertson worked in Brisbane from 1999 to 2001, when he moved to Maroochydore as the second permanent judge in that region. His Honour is actively involved in seminars conducted by the Sunshine Coast Law Association and Bar Group, and lectures from time to time at the Sunshine Coast and Griffith Universities. Judge Robertson was a foundation member of the Sunshine Coast University Law School Advisory Committee.
His Honour was regional convenor (Queensland) of the National Judicial College of Australia between 2002 and 2007.
Judge Robertson is a judge of the Childrens Court of Queensland (1994–) and was President of this court between 1999 and 2002. His Honour is a member of the Planning and Environment Court (2003–). Judge Robertson was the first solicitor to be appointed a judge of the District Court of Queensland in 1994.
